The Philippines-Tokyo Concert Series 2025, in celebration of the 127th Philippine Independence Day, brings you, Gunita: A Tribute to Maestro Gilopez Kabayao and His Music Legacy, featuring Filipino violin virtuoso, Jimmy Tagala, Jr.

Jimmy Tagala, Jr., Violin

Jimmy Tagala Jr., is one of the Philippines' finest violin virtuosos. He won 1st prize twice at the National Music Competition For the Young Artist (NAMCYA), Violin Category B and C. He studied under the tutelage of violin virtuoso and pedagogue Gilopez Kabayao, a national treasure for music in the Philippines.
He has toured with the Asian Youth Orchestra, has played solo with the UST Philharmonic Orchestra and Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. He has performed in USA, Europe, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Japan.
He has also played and was invited to perform at the Philippine Embassy in Spain and Korea during Independence Day.
Jimmy is currently teaching in Fukuoka and continuing his musical activities including chamber music and solo performance.
ジミー・タガラ ジュニアは、フィリピンの若きヴァイオリンの名手として知られている。National Music Competitions for Young Artists(NAMCYA)のヴァイオリン部門BおよびCで二度の優勝を果たす。ヴァイオリンの素晴らしい名手であり教育者でもあるギロペス・カバヤオ氏に師事。Asian Youth Orchestra(AYO) では演奏ツアーを行い、サント・トマス大学フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、フィリピン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団とソロで共演。アメリカ、ヨーロッパ各地、台湾、香港、シンガポール、中国、日本で演奏を行う。また、スペインや韓国のフィリピン大使館でフィリピン独立記念日に招かれ、演奏を行う。現在は福岡を拠点とし、レッスンをはじめ室内楽やソロ演奏など音楽活動を続けている。
Maestro Gilopez Kabayao (1929-2024)

Gilopez Kabayao was a first Filipino to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City, New York, in 1950, leading The New York Times to state that he "has all the earmarks of the true virtuoso". Named as the "Father of Outreach for Classical Music", the "Mozart to the Barrios", and the "Traveling Salesman of Music", Kabayao was noted for promoting classical music and holding concerts in various places in the Philippines.
Kabayao received the Presidential Award of Merit in 1969 and the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1972, and with his wife, the couple received the Gawad Alab ng Haraya from the NCCA in 2007 and the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2008. He was also nominated for National Artist of the Philippines in June 2024 by the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation with the endorsement of the government of Iloilo City.
